How to choose a men's sport top?

Fabric is the first criterion. Technical polyester (often recycled) and its blends wick moisture and dry fast: ideal for effort. Cotton, softer at rest, absorbs sweat, stays wet and cools you down — best for lifestyle. Merino wool excels at temperature regulation and odour resistance.

Next, the fit: a fitted or compression top supports the muscles and hugs the body for performance; a relaxed cut favours comfort and ventilation. Finally, sleeves: short sleeves or a tank for heat and indoors, long sleeves for cool runs or as a light layer. A good sport top combines breathability, moisture-wicking and freedom of movement.

T-shirts, sweaters or base layer?

Each type has its role:

  • T-shirts and tanks — the breathable base for training and warm-weather running.
  • Sweaters and sweatshirts — hoodies and crewnecks for warm-ups, recovery and everyday wear.
  • Base layers — the first technical layer that wicks moisture and keeps you warm under another garment: essential in winter and for layering.
  • Training and running tops — the technical models built for performance.

A sweatshirt keeps you warm and goes over top; a base layer, thinner and more fitted, goes underneath to manage moisture and warmth. The two complement each other in a layering system.

By sport and season

For outdoor running, a light technical tee in summer, a long-sleeve base layer in winter. For indoor training and the gym, a stretch top that breathes. For soccer, a technical jersey and a base layer under the uniform in cold weather. In winter, think layering: base layer + insulation. Round it out with our pants and shorts.

Our expert advice

For years, our team has helped runners, soccer players and athletes choose their technical tops. Our rule: a fabric that wicks moisture next to the skin, a cut suited to the activity, and layering for the cold. When in doubt, we guide you by your sport and the season.

What top should I wear to run?

A breathable technical tee or tank in summer; a long-sleeve base layer when it's cool, with a light windbreaker in winter. Avoid cotton, which holds moisture and cools you down.

What's the difference between a sweatshirt and a base layer?

A sweatshirt (or hoodie) is a warm layer worn over top, for warm-ups or everyday wear. A base layer is a thin, fitted first layer worn underneath to wick moisture and keep you warm. The two work together.

Cotton or polyester for sport?

Technical polyester wicks sweat and dries fast — ideal under effort. Cotton absorbs moisture, stays wet and cools the body; keep it for rest and lifestyle.

Do I need a compression top?

It isn't mandatory, but a compression top supports the muscles, aids circulation and helps recovery. It's especially useful on long efforts and as a base layer.

How do I choose the right top size?

Go by the brand's size chart (Under Armour generally fits true). For a compression top, the fit should be snug without restricting breathing; for a sweatshirt, choose by comfort and the layering you want.

Is a long-sleeve top too warm for training?

Not if it's a light, breathable technical fabric: it protects from the cool and works as a layer. For intense indoor training, prefer short sleeves or a tank.
