Indoor or beach?

The indoor ball is firmer and more precise, built for fast gym play. The beach ball is slightly larger, softer and water- and sand-resistant, with lower pressure. The two don't really interchange.

Leather, composite or rubber?

Leather (or microfibre) offers the best feel and is used in competition. Composite is versatile and more affordable, ideal for practice. Rubber is the most durable and economical, perfect for beginners and outdoor play.

Game or recreation?

For competition, an approved game ball with a precise feel. For school, the park or the beach with friends, a composite or rubber ball takes the wear better and costs less.

What size is a volleyball?
The official adult ball is size 5. Lighter or reduced-size balls exist for young players and beginners, easier to handle and softer on the arms when receiving.

Which ball for beginners?
A softer ball, often composite, reduces the sting on reception and makes learning easier. Training models are built for that.

What pressure should a volleyball be inflated to?
Generally around 4.3 to 4.6 psi for an indoor ball; beach balls inflate to a lower pressure. Follow the maker's guidance and use a pump with a gauge.
