Men's shorts

Shorts are the warm-season staple. The main types: running shorts (light, short, often with pockets and reflective details), training shorts (longer and stretchier for the gym), soccer shorts (breathable, for the match), 2-in-1 shorts (a built-in compression liner under an airy short) and casual/lifestyle models for everyday. See our shorts and liners.

Men's pants and joggers

For warm-ups, recovery and everyday wear: joggers (tapered fit, elastic waist), training pants and sweatpants (track pants), and comfortable lifestyle models. See our pants and joggers.

Running tights and half tights

Running tights hug the leg for muscle support and compression that aids circulation — useful on long runs, in winter running and racing. Half tights offer the same feel in a shorter version for summer. See our tights and leggings.

Pants, joggers or tights: what's the difference?

Pants (or joggers) are worn loose and over top, for warmth, warm-ups and comfort. Tights are worn close to the body, against the skin or as a base layer, for performance and moisture management. Many runners layer a short or pants over tights in winter.

Which bottoms should you choose by activity?

  • Running: a light short in summer, tights in winter (or a short over tights).
  • Training / gym: a stretch short or jogger, depending on temperature.
  • Soccer: a breathable match short, with a compression liner if needed.
  • Trail: a short or half tight with pockets for gels and phone.
  • Lifestyle: a comfortable jogger or short for everyday.

Fabrics

Technical polyester and nylon wick moisture and dry fast; stretch fabrics (with spandex) move with you; compression fabrics support the muscles; and merino adds warmth and odour resistance for winter. Look too for zip pockets to secure keys and phone, and reflective details for evening runs.

What's the best running short?

A light, breathable short, short in length (5 to 7 inch inseam for most runners), in a quick-dry fabric, with pockets for gels and phone. A 2-in-1 model adds a compression liner against chafing.

Should I wear compression shorts?

They aren't mandatory, but a compression liner supports the muscles, aids circulation and prevents thigh chafing. Many runners wear them on their own or under a 2-in-1 short.

What's the difference between joggers and training pants?

Joggers have a tapered fit and an elastic waist, more fitted and lifestyle. Training pants (sweatpants, track pants) are often straighter and lighter, built for warm-ups and airflow. The difference is mostly the cut.

What inseam should I choose for a short?

For running, 5 to 7 inches for lightness and freedom; for the gym and team sport, 7 to 9 inches for more coverage. It's mostly a matter of preference.

Are 2-in-1 shorts worth it?

Yes, if you want to avoid chafing and get light support: the built-in liner offers the comfort of compression under an airy short. Two pieces in one.

Which bottoms for winter running?

A thermal running tight next to the skin, on its own or under a short. Look for a moisture-wicking fabric, wind protection at the front of the thighs, and reflective details for night runs.
