Men's base layers — warmth, breathability and moisture management
The base layer is the first piece you put on: worn next to the skin, it wicks sweat and regulates your temperature, from the light technical tee in summer to the thermal shirt in winter. At Soccer Sport Fitness, you'll find merino, synthetic and compression base layers for running, soccer, training and the outdoors, from Smartwool, Under Armour, 2XU, Mizuno, Columbia and Inov-8.

What is a base layer?
A base layer is the first layer, in direct contact with the skin (next-to-skin). Its main job isn't primarily to keep you warm, but to manage moisture: it pulls sweat away from the skin to keep you dry and prevent chilling. In winter, it adds insulation and handles temperature regulation; in summer, a lightweight version mostly wicks moisture. It's the foundation of a good layering system.
Merino, synthetic or compression?
Three main families, three uses:
| Merino | Synthetic | Compression | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warmth | Excellent | Good | Light |
| Moisture | Very good | Excellent, quick-drying | Good |
| Odour control | Natural, excellent | Depends on treatment | Variable |
| Best for | Cold, long outings, outdoors | Intense effort, fast drying | Muscle support, recovery |
Merino (Smartwool) is unbeatable for warmth, breathability and natural odour resistance. Synthetic wicks very fast and dries more quickly — perfect for intense effort. The compression base layer adds muscle support that aids circulation and recovery.
Under Armour: HeatGear or ColdGear?
At Under Armour, two lines come up often. HeatGear is built for heat: light, ultra-breathable, it wicks sweat in summer and during intense training. ColdGear targets the cold: a brushed inner face traps body heat while wicking moisture, ideal for winter. Simple rule: HeatGear when it's hot, ColdGear when it's cold.
Choosing by temperature
- Above 15 °C: a lightweight, breathable base layer, mostly for moisture-wicking (or no layer at all).
- 0 to 15 °C: a mid-weight base layer, on its own or under a midlayer.
- Below 0 °C: a thermal base layer (ideally merino or ColdGear) under a midlayer and a windbreaker jacket.
When should you wear a base layer? By activity
Winter running and cold weather running: a breathable base layer under a midlayer. Soccer in cold weather: under the jersey to hold warmth. Winter training, winter hiking, skiing and cycling: the base layer manages moisture while the upper layers insulate. In short, whenever it's cool and you're moving, it belongs in your kit.
