Down or synthetic insulation?

Down gives the best warmth for the weight and packs down well, but doesn't like moisture. Synthetic insulation stays warm even when wet and dries fast: more versatile in wet snow and rain. Many coats add a water-repellent or waterproof shell to protect the insulation.

Protection against the elements

A good winter coat blocks the wind, sheds snow and rain, and covers well with a hood (sometimes removable or fur-trimmed), fitted cuffs and enough length. Sealed zippers and storm flaps make the difference in deep cold.

By activity

  • Everyday / city: a warm, comfortable insulated coat with a hood.
  • Outdoors: a waterproof shell with insulation for snow and wind.
  • Cold-weather sport: a breathable coat so you don't overheat under effort.

How to choose a winter coat

Think in layers: the coat is the outer shell. Underneath, add a base layer that wicks moisture and a midlayer that insulates. For milder cold, a puffer or a windbreaker may be enough.
