Soccer base layers and underwear

A base layer is worn against the skin, under the jersey: it manages temperature, wicks sweat and keeps muscles warm. A must for cold-weather soccer in Canada. Umbro, Joma, Diadora and Puma models, in short or long sleeves.

Thermal or compression?

The thermal layer insulates for cold-weather matches and training. The compression layer supports the muscles, aids circulation and works in mild weather too. Some models combine both.

Short or long sleeves?

Long sleeves protect the arms from cold and from scrapes on hard ground; short sleeves suit milder temperatures or wear under a long-sleeve jersey. A high collar adds warmth in early season.

How to wear it

Close to the body, without squeezing. The base layer goes under the team jersey and shorts; in deep cold, add a long compression sock under your soccer sock.

What's the difference between a thermal and a compression layer?
The thermal layer insulates for cold-weather matches. The compression layer supports the muscles and aids circulation, and works in mild weather too. Some models combine both functions.

Can you wear a base layer under an official jersey?
Yes, that's what it's for. Choose a neutral colour or one matching your jersey; many leagues require the base layer to match the jersey sleeve colour.

Does compression improve performance?
It mainly helps with muscle support and comfort, and can reduce fatigue over long matches. It's not a magic speed boost, but a real comfort many players appreciate.
