For beginner, intermediate and advanced runners

Whether you're prepping your first 5 km, targeting a marathon, or pushing into ultra trail, we've got the range for your level and mileage. In store, our team helps you choose based on your gait, weight, main surface and weekly mileage.

For sports nutrition (gels, bars, electrolytes), see our nutrition collection.

How do I choose my first running shoes?

Three variables: your gait (neutral or overpronation — most runners are neutral), your main surface (road, mixed trail, technical trail), and your weekly mileage. For a beginner doing 10-20 km/week on road: Brooks Ghost or Saucony Triumph (versatile, durable). Our in-store team analyzes your gait and recommends a model that fits.

How do I start running?

Progressive run-walk program: alternate 1 min run / 2 min walk for 20-30 min, 3 times a week. Gradually increase running time each week (no more than 10% weekly increase). In 8 to 12 weeks, most beginners run 30 min continuously. Invest in a good pair of shoes from the start — it prevents injuries.

What's the difference between road and trail running shoes?

Road: cushioning and lightness maximized, relatively flat sole for asphalt (Brooks Ghost, Saucony Triumph). Trail: aggressive lugs (4-6 mm), rock plate under the sole, more abrasion-resistant upper, sometimes GTX waterproof membrane (Brooks Catamount, Saucony Peregrine, Salomon Pulsar). If you do both, pair a versatile road shoe with a dedicated trail shoe.

When should I replace my running shoes?

Rule of thumb: between 600 and 1000 km depending on the model, your weight and the surface (trail wears faster). Signs: visible wear on the outsole, cushioning foam that no longer rebounds, new pains in legs or hips. Keep a running log with km per pair to anticipate replacement.

What hydration for what distance?

Under 10 km in cool weather: not needed. 10-20 km: handheld or lightweight Nathan belt. 20-30 km or hot weather: Nathan belt with pockets. 30 km+ or trail: 5-12 L hydration vest (Salomon, Nike Run Vest). For ultras (50 km+): 12 L+ vest with water and nutrition on board.

Compression sleeves: during or after running?

Both. During long-distance efforts (half, marathon, ultra), they limit muscle vibration and support venous return. After training (1 to 2 hours, or even the following night), they speed up recovery. Reference brands: 2XU and CEP. Wear directly on skin, no cotton in between.

What goes in my winter training kit?

Three-layer system: technical base layer (Under Armour Rival Core, 2XU Aero), insulating mid-layer (fleece or Smartwool), windproof shell (Brooks Canopy, Columbia). Add long tights, mitts (warmer than gloves), hat or headband, neck gaiter for cold wind. For pre-dawn or night runs: Nathan headlamp and reflective vest.

Do you do gait analysis in-store?

Yes — our team watches your gait and advises based on your level, weight, mileage and surface. We explain cushioning, stability, drop and stack height so you understand model differences. For a specific goal (marathon, trail, recovery), in-store fitting at our Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures boutique is ideal.
