Running shorts

Running shorts prioritize lightness and breathability. For daily training, a 5-to-7-inch model in a quick-dry fabric; for racing, an ultralight split short that frees the stride. Look for pockets for gels and phone, and reflective details for evening runs.

Half tights and compression shorts

The compression short hugs the thigh for muscle support that aids circulation and reduces chafing. The half tight goes further: longer, often with side pockets, it's a favourite for the marathon and fast running for its support and moisture management.

Trail running shorts

The trail has its demands: plenty of pockets (gels, keys, phone), a rugged fabric and often a built-in liner. You'll find trail shorts from Brooks (Cascadia line), Salomon and Inov-8. Round it out with our trail running shoes.

2-in-1 shorts

The 2-in-1 short combines an airy outer short with a built-in compression liner: you get the comfort of compression, anti-chafing between the thighs and often extra pockets — ideal for long runs and ultras. Two pieces in one.

Which inseam should you choose?

The inseam changes everything, between lightness and coverage:

TypeBest for
Split shortRacing, speed
5" shortDaily running
7" shortTraining, gym
Half tightMarathon, long runs
2-in-1 shortLong runs, anti-chafing
Trail shortTrail, ultra

Simple rule: the more you chase speed, the shorter and lighter the short; the more you want comfort and coverage, the longer you go.

What inseam should I choose?

For daily running, 5 to 7 inches; for racing and speed, a split short or 3 inches; for the gym and more coverage, 7 to 9 inches. It's mostly a matter of preference.

Are half tights better than shorts?

Not better, different. Half tights offer muscle support and moisture management valued on the marathon and fast running; shorts prioritize ventilation and freedom. Many runners own both.

What are 2-in-1 shorts?

An airy outer short with a built-in compression liner. You get the comfort of compression, anti-chafing between the thighs and often extra pockets — two pieces in one.

Should I wear liners?

A liner prevents chafing and offers light support; many runners prefer it to underwear. On long runs, it noticeably reduces irritation.

What's the best trail running short?

A rugged short with several pockets (gels, keys, phone) and often a built-in liner, like the Salomon, Brooks Cascadia or Inov-8 models. Choose by how long your outings are.

How long should running shorts be?

Most runners are comfortable between 5 and 7 inches. Shorter (or split) for speed and racing, longer for more coverage in training.
