Choosing the right soccer ball size by age matters more than you'd think: a ball that's too big or too heavy hurts a child's technique and can even cause injury. The rule is simple — size 3 for the little ones, size 4 for kids, size 5 for teens and adults. This guide gives you the full size chart, the FIFA standards and the benchmarks to choose without second-guessing.
At Soccer Sport Fitness, we've been advising players, coaches and parents for years. This guide is based on official federation recommendations and our in-store experience.
Ball size follows the player's age: size 3 (ages 3 to 7), size 4 (ages 8 to 12) and size 5 (13 and up, through adult). Size 5 is the official match ball. If you're between two sizes for a young player, stay with the smaller one recommended for their age.

What size soccer ball by age?
Soccer ball size is chosen first by the player's age and category. Using the right size helps a child develop technique, control the ball and play safely. You can shop by size in our soccer balls collection.
- Size 3 — ages 3 to 7 (U8 and under): the introduction ball and the youth ball of choice, lighter and smaller, perfect for first kicks.
- Size 4 — ages 8 to 12 (U9 to U12): the junior ball for kids and pre-teens; it's also the size used in futsal.
- Size 5 — ages 13 and up (U13, U15 and older): the official match ball, for teens and the adult ball.
These categories follow federation standards. In Canada, most youth leagues apply these sizes by age group — check your child's league rules if you're unsure.
My child is between two age groups
Is your child 7 or 8 and stuck between a size 3 and a size 4? As a rule, stay with the smaller ball: lighter, it makes it easier to develop technique and control. A junior ball that's too big pushes a child to “boot” the ball rather than master it. Make an exception, though, if their league already requires the larger size — league rules always win. When in doubt, we'll help you in store.

What are the FIFA standards for soccer balls?
An official or certified ball meets FIFA standards. There are three certification levels, from most accessible to most demanding:
- FIFA Basic — the certified entry level, for training and recreational play.
- FIFA Quality — a reliable ball for amateur competition and the league ball.
- FIFA Quality Pro — the highest standard, reserved for top-level match balls.
To earn these certifications, a FIFA ball must pass a series of lab tests:
- Circumference — meeting the official measurements (68-70 cm for a size 5).
- Weight — staying within the regulation range (410-450 g in size 5).
- Sphericity (shape) — staying perfectly round, even after thousands of strikes.
- Rebound — a consistent bounce from one area of the ball to another.
- Water absorption — not getting heavier in the rain.
- Pressure loss — holding its inflation pressure over time.
In short: the higher the certification, the straighter the ball flies and the better it keeps its shape. For a competition or league ball, aim for at least FIFA Quality; for training, a FIFA Basic (or a good training ball) is plenty.
Sizes 1 and 2 and special balls
Beyond the three playing sizes, you'll come across other formats:
- Size 1 (mini ball): a small display and skills ball, also popular as a souvenir. Great for working on your touch at home. See our mini soccer balls.
- Size 2: a technical training ball, mostly used for control and juggling.
- Futsal ball: usually a size 4 with reduced bounce, built for indoor play on hard surfaces. See our futsal balls.

At the same size, not all balls are equal. The match ball has a more refined build (often thermally bonded) for a steady flight and a premium touch — ideal on match days. The training ball, more durable and affordable, handles daily repetition. The major ball brands — Select, adidas, Nike, Puma, Molten, Umbro — all offer FIFA-certified models. Caring for and replacing your soccer ball
How to measure a soccer ball
Size corresponds to circumference: measure around the ball with a soft tape at its widest point. A size 5 is 68-70 cm, a size 4 about 63.5-66 cm and a size 3 about 58-61 cm.
When to replace a worn ball
Replace your ball when it shows these signs: it deforms or is no longer perfectly round, it loses pressure too fast, its seams open up, or its surface is peeling and slippery. An outdoor ball takes far more abrasion on asphalt or turf than an indoor ball — ideally keep one for each use.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size soccer ball for a child?
Size 3 for ages 3 to 7, size 4 for ages 8 to 12, and size 5 from age 13. The ball must match the age: too big or too heavy, it hurts technique and increases the risk of injury.
What is the size of an official soccer ball?
The official match ball is a size 5: circumference of 68 to 70 cm and weight of 410 to 450 g. It's the size used by players 13 and up, all the way to the professional level.
What is a FIFA Quality Pro ball?
It's the highest FIFA certification level: the ball has passed the strictest tests for circumference, weight, shape, rebound, water absorption and pressure loss. It's reserved for top-level match balls. FIFA Quality suits amateur competition and leagues.
What size ball for futsal?
Futsal is usually played with a size 4 ball with reduced bounce (low bounce), built for indoor play on hard surfaces. Younger age groups can use a size 3.
How do I know if my ball is properly inflated?
Follow the pressure printed near the valve (often 0.6 to 1.1 bar / 8 to 16 psi) and use a pump with a gauge. A properly inflated ball gives slightly under thumb pressure, without being rock-hard or soft.
In short
Soccer ball size is chosen by age: size 3 for the little ones, size 4 for kids, size 5 for teens and adults. Check your league rules, watch the inflation pressure, pick the right FIFA certification level for your use, and replace your ball as soon as it wears out.
