Soccer shin guards

Sleeve, straps or ankle guard: Puma, Uhlsport, Umbro, Joma

Soccer shin guards

Shin guards are required in almost every league, and the right pair comes down to three things: the size, the retention system and the level of protection. Here you'll find 35+ models from Puma, Uhlsport, Reusch, Umbro, Diadora, Joma and Kwik Goal.

What size shin guards?

Size is based on the player's height, not their shoe size. A well-fitted shin guard covers the shin from the top of the shoe to about two fingers below the knee, without moving. Our shin guard size guide has the full chart by height.

Sleeve, straps or slip-in?

Three retention systems. The sleeve holds the guard in place without straps — convenient and comfortable, very popular. Classic straps let you adjust the tension. The lightweight slip-in model sits directly in the soccer sock, often with a compression sleeve over top.

With or without ankle protection?

Some models include a padded ankle guard, useful for defenders and players prone to low contact. Others stay minimalist for lightness. Younger players often benefit from the extra ankle protection.

Junior or adult

The full range comes in junior and adult sizes. For a growing child, recheck the size at the start of each season — a shin guard that's too short no longer protects the upper shin.

Complete your kit with our soccer socks that hold the guard in place, all our soccer equipment and our soccer shoes.

What size shin guards should I choose?

Size is based on the player's height, not their shoe size. A well-fitted shin guard covers the shin from the top of the shoe to about two fingers below the knee. Check our size guide for the full chart by height.

Sleeve, straps or slip-in?

The sleeve holds the guard without straps — convenient and comfortable. Straps let you adjust the tension. The lightweight slip-in model sits directly in the soccer sock, often with a compression sleeve over top. It mostly comes down to the comfort you want.

Do I need shin guards with ankle protection?

An integrated ankle guard adds useful protection for defenders, players prone to low contact and younger players. Models without it are lighter, favoured by attacking players who prioritize freedom of movement.

Are shin guards mandatory?

Yes, in virtually every organized league, shin guards are required and must be fully covered by the sock. It's a basic safety rule of soccer, from youth to senior level.

How do you wear shin guards?

They're worn against the leg (or in a sleeve), then the soccer sock fully covers them. They should be centred on the shin and not slip. A sleeve model, or one held firmly by the sock, solves most slipping problems.

What size for a growing child?

Recheck the size at the start of each season. A shin guard that has become too short no longer covers the upper shin and protects poorly. Better to remeasure by height than to reuse a pair that's grown too small.
