Soccer shoes: the complete guide

Choosing a soccer shoe follows a precise order: the surface first, then the material, your style of play and finally the size. Here you'll find all our soccer shoes — cleats for natural grass, artificial grass and turf outsoles, futsal shoes — for men, women and kids.

1. The playing surface

This is the decisive criterion. Moulded cleats (FG) are built for natural grass and firm ground. Artificial grass (AG) and turf (TT) outsoles have shorter, more numerous studs designed for synthetic surfaces. Indoor soccer shoes (IT) have a flat non-marking sole for the gym.

In Quebec, many players alternate: cleats on grass in summer, futsal indoors in winter. One pair per season covers the year.

2. Leather or synthetic

Leather softens and moulds to the foot: a gentler touch, better comfort, ideal for wide feet. Synthetic is lighter, dries quickly, cleans easily and holds its shape — often the better pick on abrasive turf.

3. Style of play

The lines split into three families: speed (lightweight, reactive plate), control (textured surface, ball touch) and comfort (generous fit, soft touch). At Puma: Ultra, Future and King. Joma, Umbro, Under Armour and Diadora follow the same logic, often at more accessible prices.

4. The size

How do you choose soccer shoes?

Work in this order: the playing surface first (natural grass, turf or indoor), then the upper material (leather or synthetic), your style of play (speed, control or comfort) and finally the size. The surface is by far the most important criterion — it determines the outsole type.

What's the difference between FG, AG, TT and IT?

FG (Firm Ground): moulded cleats for natural grass. AG (Artificial Ground): shorter, more numerous studs for synthetic turf. TT (Turf): outsole with small nubs for hard surfaces and older turf. IT (Indoor): flat non-marking sole for the gym and futsal.

Can one pair work on every surface?

An FG/AG model covers both natural grass and turf, which is enough for many players. For indoor soccer, though, a flat non-marking sole is required in most leagues — so you'll need a second pair for the winter season.

Leather or synthetic?

Leather stretches and moulds to the foot, giving a softer touch and more comfort, especially if you have a wide foot. Synthetic is lighter, dries fast, cleans easily and holds its shape longer. For beginners or for abrasive turf, synthetic is generally the better choice.

How do you pick the right size?

Aim for about 5 mm of room in front of the big toe for adults, and 1 cm for kids to allow for growth. Measure both feet at the end of the day, go with the larger one, and always try them on with soccer socks. Fit varies a lot between brands, which is why trying them on in store helps.

How long does a pair of soccer shoes last?

About a full season for a regular player, often less on synthetic turf, which is more abrasive. Replace your pair when the studs round off, the upper splits, or the heel starts to slip.

Do new shoes need breaking in?

In leather, yes: plan a few training sessions before wearing them in a match, so the upper softens and moulds to your foot. In synthetic, they're ready straight out of the box.
