What size by age?

Ball size follows the player's age. Size 3 (58-61 cm, 300-320 g) suits ages 3 to 7. Size 4 (63.5-66 cm, 350-390 g) targets ages 8 to 12 — it's also the futsal size. Size 5 (68-70 cm, 410-450 g) is the official ball from age 13 up to the professional level.

Match, training or specialized use?

The match ball has a more refined build — often thermally bonded — for a steady flight and a premium touch. The training ball, more durable and affordable, absorbs hundreds of strikes a week. For indoor play, the futsal ball with its reduced bounce stays controllable on hard courts.

Then come the specialized formats: street soccer for asphalt, beach soccer for sand, freestyle for juggling and mini balls in size 1 for touch work.

FIFA certifications

An official ball meets standards verified in a lab: circumference, weight, sphericity, rebound, water absorption and pressure loss. FIFA Basic is the certified entry level, FIFA Quality suits amateur competition and leagues, and FIFA Quality Pro is the highest standard. For a league ball, aim for at least FIFA Quality.

Inflation pressure and care

The recommended pressure is printed near the valve, usually between 0.6 and 1.1 bar (8 to 16 psi). An over-inflated ball turns hard and bounces poorly; under-inflated, it throws off your control. Check it before each match with a pump with a gauge, and replace your ball as soon as it deforms, loses pressure quickly or its seams open up.

What size soccer ball by age?

Size 3 for ages 3 to 7 (U8 and under), size 4 for ages 8 to 12 (U9 to U12) and size 5 from age 13 (U13 and up, through adult). A ball that's too big or too heavy hurts a child's technique and increases the risk of injury.

What is the size of an official soccer ball?

The official match ball is a size 5: circumference of 68 to 70 cm and weight of 410 to 450 g. It's the size used from age 13 all the way to the professional level.

What's the difference between FIFA Basic, FIFA Quality and FIFA Quality Pro?

They're the three FIFA certification levels, from least to most demanding. Basic is the certified entry level, for training and recreational play. Quality suits amateur competition and league balls. Quality Pro requires the strictest tolerances on shape, rebound and water absorption — it's the top-level standard.

What size ball for futsal?

Futsal is generally played with a size 4 low-bounce ball, built for indoor play on hard courts. Younger age groups use size 3. A true futsal ball differs from a ball simply labelled indoor by its bounce, which is controlled to precise standards.

When should you replace a soccer ball?

Replace it when it deforms and is no longer perfectly round, loses pressure too quickly, its seams open up, or its surface becomes peeled and slippery. A ball used on asphalt or turf wears out far faster than an indoor ball.

My child is between two age groups — which size should I get?

Stay with the smaller ball. Lighter, it makes it easier to develop technique and control, whereas a ball that's too big pushes a child to boot it rather than master it. Make an exception only if their league already requires the larger size.
