How to choose men's sportswear

Good sportswear is first about breathability and sweat-wicking. Technical fabrics (dry-fit style, in polyester or recycled polyester) pull moisture away from the skin to keep you dry, unlike cotton, which holds it. Look for freedom of movement too: a suitable cut and stretch fabric follow the body without hindering your stride or motion.

Compression supports the muscles, aids circulation and helps recovery — useful on long efforts and after training. For the cold, think in layers: a base layer that wicks moisture and regulates temperature, an insulating mid-layer for warmth, and an outer windproof or waterproof shell against the elements. In summer, aim for ultralight and maximum ventilation.

By sport

Every discipline has its needs. For running, prioritize light and breathable (technical tee, shorts, leggings in winter). For soccer, a technical jersey, shorts and socks. For gym and training, go for stretch and freedom of movement. And for the outdoors, the layering approach (base layer, insulation, windbreaker) rules.

Our technical apparel brands: Under Armour, Puma, Brooks, 2XU (compression), Champion, Columbia, Smartwool (merino), Salomon and ASICS.

By season

In Canada, your kit changes with the weather. Summer calls for ultralight, ventilated pieces; fall and spring, a mid-layer and a windbreaker; winter, a thermal base layer under an insulated jacket; rain, a breathable waterproof shell.

How to choose the right size

Go by each brand's size chart (they vary: Under Armour generally fits true, some European brands run narrower). For compression, the fit should be snug but not restrict breathing; for an outer shell, allow room for the layers underneath. Between two sizes, choose by use: fitted for performance, roomier for comfort.

What should I wear to run?

A breathable technical tee or tank and shorts in summer; leggings and a light long-sleeve when it's cool; in winter, add a thermal base layer and a windbreaker. Avoid cotton, which holds moisture.

How do I choose sport shorts?

Pick the length and cut by activity (shorter and lighter for running, roomier for the gym), a sweat-wicking fabric, and check for a built-in compression liner and pockets if you need them.

Which fabric is the most breathable?

Technical polyester fabrics (often recycled) and blends with spandex wick moisture very well. Merino wool is excellent for temperature regulation and odour control. Cotton holds sweat and dries slowly.

Should I wear compression?

Compression isn't mandatory, but it supports the muscles, aids circulation and helps recovery. It's especially useful on long efforts and after training.

How do I wash technical apparel?

Wash cold on a gentle cycle, without fabric softener (it clogs the breathable fibres) or bleach. Air-dry rather than tumble-dry to preserve the stretch and the fabric's technologies.

What's the difference between cotton and polyester for sport?

Polyester wicks moisture and dries fast, ideal for effort. Cotton is comfortable at rest but absorbs sweat, stays wet and cools the body — best avoided for intense training.
